The email area I'm struggling with is the filters within Gmail. I have a filter set-up for say my work email to effectively create a separate Inbox, eg all email to my work address is assigned a label Work and I skip the Inbox as per your instructions. However, I want to be able to separate work emails sent form certain individuals, so I've set-up a filter to set a label by sending address for say David and this would be assigned a label: VIP - The trouble is a copy of the message still appears in the Work Inbox.

Is there any way around this - the 'rules' in Outlook were a lot more flexible?

You are absolutely right - the rules on Gmail are not as advanced as those in Outlook.

I can see two ways to make this work for you.

The first option is using Gmail filters.

For the general Work Inbox filter you add the email addresses of your VIP customers in the 'Doesn't have' criteria for the filter. This ensures that email from your VIP customers will not end up in your Work Inbox, but all other email will.

Then you will need to create a filter for each VIP customer specifying your Work email in the 'To' field and the email address of your VIP in the 'From' field. You can now direct VIP emails to a different folder/label.

The second option is to use the filtering capabilities of your email client. So you would be able to use the filtering in Thunderbird for more advanced filtering. This will work well if you generally use your email client to handle your email, and keep in mind that if you do use Gmail occasionally the filtering will only take place once the emails are synchronized with your email client. Once the filtering has taken place on your email client the results will of course also be visible in Gmail. If you are using multiple computers you will need to set up the same filters on all computers.
