Recommended solution: Gmail Thunderbird
Easy-Email recommends the Gmail Thunderbird combination to synchronize your email.
Thunderbird: a powerful and free email client
If you do not already have an email client or you are considering changing email client, we highly recommend Thunderbird.
- Thunderbird is free to download, it works on Mac, Linux and Windows and has pretty much all of the functions of any other well known email client such as threaded conversations, folder management, filters etc.
- In general Thunderbird is much easier to configure for multiple email addresses than any other email client we have tested.
- Thunderbird can manage multiple inboxes and outboxes for multiple email addresses and add a signature related to that particular email address.
- It has plugins that allow it to synchronize your address book with Gmail automatically.
Gmail: The best webmail client...and free!
And if you do not already have a webmail client and you want to synchronize your email so you can access it from any computer (still using Thunderbird, Outlook or any other email client) you will need an IMAP server as a synchronization hub.
- Gmail offers both POP and IMAP technologies which means it can handle multiple email addresses and synchronize your email. For an explanation of these terms see IMAP vs POP.
- You can set up a Gmail acccount and store up to 7.5GB for free (and you can add more storage for a fee)
- Gmail also has threaded conversations, a very powerful search feature, great filters and other email organization features.
- Gmail can also manage multiple inboxes and outboxes for multiple email addresses.
Why synchronize Gmail and Thunderbird?
Webmail users can email offline.
Thunderbird users can synchronize their email across multiple computers and check their email anywhere.
If you already use Thunderbird and you want to synchronize your email across multiple computers you'll need an IMAP server. Gmail offers this for free and it works really well with Thunderbird.
If you are a webmail user (Hotmail, Yahoo, Aol or Gmail) and you want to work offline you'll need an email client. Thunderbird is free, works on all operating systems and works really well with Gmail!
You can even synchronize your contacts - ie add a contact in Thunderbird and it will be added to your Gmail contacts and vice versa.
