Gmail IMAP: Synchronize your email
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and it is the function that allows you to sync your mail between different accounts.
Once Gmail IMAP is enabled, and your email clients are set up to sync with Gmail, the Gmail server acts as a synchronization hub.

The emails, whether sent, received or in folders, remain on the gmail server where they can be accessed from any computer.
You can also choose to download a copy to your computer so that you can work offline on your Outlook, Live Mail, Entourage or whatever email client you are used to.
A note re. other email providers:
Of the four big webmail providers only Gmail and AOL have IMAP capabilities. Hotmail and Yahoo do not.
Many aspects of our solution rely on the way Gmail works. There are some functions that work in a specific way on Gmail such as:
- Storing of sent messages
- Spam filter
- Sending outgoing messages using different identities
- Filtering incoming messages
- Address book synchronisation
You can set up this solution using a different IMAP server, however your success in making it work will depend on the way this server works. An example is the Gmail spam filter – by not using Gmail you will need some other way of providing similar functionality. We have found Gmail to be the best but feel free to try something different and post on the forum.
