Gmail set up: Managing email using labels

The gmail email labelling system is up to you to define: for example you can keep it as broad as "personal" or have lots of personal labels.
Gmail Labels - step 1: create a new label
Check the box next to an email, to go labels in the menu at the top of your inbox, choose create new and type in the name you want.
Each label you set up will automatically create a label in the list on the left. You can label an email before or after opening it.
Gmail labels step 2: choose an existing label
If the email already has a suitable label just choose it from the drop down box. In the example below, the highlighted email was a joke and the label for this is called "This is good".
Gmail labels step 3 - searching the labels
If you want to see all of the emails in the "This is good" folder simply click on the folder from the list on the left (I obviously don't get many jokes worth keeping).
Note: You do not have to remember which label you saved it under, Gmail's search function is excellent so you can search by name, subject matter, date or other parameters also. For this reason it is easier to keep the number of folders to a minimum in Gmail.
Gmail Labels step 4: moving labelled emails
In Gmail emails can have several labels so the emails can be in several places at once! The second label to the right of the "this is good" label in the example above shows that some of these are still in the inbox. The ones without a second label are no longer in the inbox.
I don't need this joke in my inbox (I've read it and don't need to respond) so I use the Move To button to move it to the "this is good" label. Using Move To removes the inbox label.
