In Outlook 2010 you can only turn off the reading pane on a folder by folder basis.

There is a way to turn off the reading pane for all folders though.

You can change the default startup folder for Outlook.

Outlook does not automatically notify you when new mail arrives in an IMAP account.

You can choose to download a copy of your emails so you can work offline as well. Outlook 2010 does this by default. This means you will be able to read and respond to emails when you are on a plane or a train for instance. Once you get an internet connection again your emails will be sent.

In Outlook email threads are called conversations.

Problem: You have just created a new Gmail IMAP Account in Outlook 2010 and Outlook creates a Deleted Items folder for you instead of the Trash folder.

Problem: You are setting up a new email account in Outlook 2010 and the Add New Account wizard gives you the following error:

An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available.

Click Next to attempt using an unencrypted connection.
